The difference is that instead of a hosted service like 1Password syncing it for you, you sync that database file yourself using a file-syncing service like Dropbox or Edward Snowden's recommended. Unlike 1Password which can store data in 18 different categories, Secrets is limited to a total of five different item types. In many respects, Secrets for Mac is like the ghost. 1Password for Windows works directly from the sync file rather than syncing with an internal database. So to keep in sync with Windows the best thing to do is to set up folder sync from the Mac to the USB stick.

The recent release of iCloud Drive for Windows allows files to be shared between Macs and PCs. For some apps, this allows for cross-platform sync. However, our new sync system does not actually work by storing files in iCloud Drive; it uses a different technology called CloudKit. iCloud Sync remains exclusive to Mac and iOS at this time.
